Rogerstone Grassroots 08/04/2019
Award Winning Performance… Rogerstone’s award-winning Ballet Cymru will bring back their critically acclaimed and extraordinary adaptation of Shakespeare’s masterpiece Romeo & Juliet, which won Best Large Scale Dance Production at the Wales Theatre Awards in 2014, to The Riverfront Theatre in Newport on the 30th and 31st of May. The production features exciting choreography with intense fighting, passionate duets and universal themes which echo through dramatic and lyrical choreography with a contemporary twist, giving it an urban edge. As in many Ballet Cymru productions, there is a Welsh element to the story. This tragic love story is set in Wales in the near future and the famous ballroom scene features Welsh clog dancing with strong rhythms and stamping movements, which add an extra layer of tension and aggression to the atmosphere. The ballet has exquisite costumes by Georg Meyer-Wiel, who studied at The Royal College of Art and has created costumes for some of the world’s leading companies. Artistic Director Darius James creates a world of danger and excitement with extraordinary video projections, where two young lovers are caught in an age old feud.
Romeo a Juliet is a dynamic and unique collaboration between Ballet Cymru and The Riverfront in Newport.
